Job Numbers and later contractors’ serial numbers (e.g. Yard Numbers) were advised by Confidential Admiralty Fleet Orders (CAFO). From November 1941 a Confidential Book (CB 3064) was issued at roughly six monthly intervals which contained current Job Numbers.
\r\n\r\nNot all warships under construction or conversion received Job Numbers. They were not given to motor minesweepers, motor torpedo boats, motor gun boats, motor launches and the smaller landing craft.. In the early part of the war, trawlers and other merchant vessels being converted for naval use were given Job Numbers. Later another set of numbers issued was the ‘ER’ series (Emergency Repairs) which also included some conversions.
\r\n\r\nThe list will be found useful in identifying ships referred to in WW2 new building programmes, in work records in shipyards, in port movements, for example the dry docking of new ships, in machinery and equipment suppliers orders, and in correspondence, plans and photographs. The then current terminology is used, e.g. both LCT and TLC refer to Tank Landing Craft, sometimes with Mark number in brackets.<.p>\r\n\r\nThis table has been compiled from CAFOs held in ADM 182 at the Public Record Office and copies of CB 3064 held by Naval Historical Branch, and includes virtually all the Job Numbers known to have been issued. Also included are new construction undertaken by the three main Royal Dockyards in the United Kingdom where numbers in a ‘D’ series were allocated. Further information has been added from reliable sources, e.g. where the original did not give the final name or yard number, and on conversions.
\r\n\r\nThe compiler gratefully acknowledges the help given by Doctor Ian Buxton, Captain Chris Page and his predecessor as Head of the Naval Historical Branch, the late David Brown, and their colleagues, Bob Todd of the National Maritime Museum, John Landels and the World Ship Society Yard List team together with the staff of the Public Record Office.<.p>\r\n\r\nGeorge Moore 2004
\r\n\r\n\r\nTo order your copy of the \"Admiralty Job Number 1939-1945\" listing, send a pound sterling cheque or your Visa/MasterCard details to: -- WSS, The Gables, School Lane, Elton, Peterborough PW8 6RS, United Kingdom. However, unlike those vessels of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force, which are fairly well documented, he had extreme difficulty in finding out anything about the Customs craft that he had found. It seemed that, although the service had operated a large number of craft during the years 1920 – date, there was nowhere that the enthusiast could turn to for details. For a few years he photographed and listed all the vessels he found, checked builders lists, trawled through 1950’s and 1960’s Admiralty Small Craft Disposal Lists, made numerous phone calls, and wrote a whole forest of letters. More recently he went to the National Records Office where information on the pre WWII vessels could be read and finally found two Customs Officers who had an interest in the subject and who helped him to tidy up the book ready for publication.
\r\n\r\nThe result is a directory of all the various classes of craft operated by HMC&E during the period 1920 – 2005, although the author is acutely aware that with the lack of published material available for research, some classes, or individual boats, may have been omitted.
\r\n\r\nThis 84 page A4 portrait softback book with card covers is lavishly illustrated with 123 photographs of craft both in service and ex service and 11 pages of top rate drawings.
